Live from Forest Grass - the first days of our nature camp

On Monday, our nature summer camp at Kölked-Erdőfű started. Organised jointly with the Csányi Foundation, the camp, which runs until Saturday, will give 15 children the opportunity to enrich their knowledge of the natural values of the world around us. Our programmes will immerse our campers in the diversity of nature, with the aim of exploring as many aspects of nature as possible with the children.

On the first day of the camp, we got to know each other and the Erdőfi Major Guesthouse and its beautiful surroundings. We played games, talked about the communities and together we set up two wildlife cameras to capture some of the night life in the forest.

The next day, we woke up together with the sun, as we were expected at the Bird Ringing Station in Dávod at 7 am. During the morning we took part in a bird ringing and field birding organised by the Gébics Nature Conservation Association, where we learned a lot of interesting facts about the many species of birds found in our country. Among other things, we learned how to recognise the different species of reed warblers, where the party swallows and gyrfalcons spend their time, and how the magnificent colourful plumage of the kingfisher helps the birds. Releasing the birds after ringing was a special experience for all the children. In the afternoon session, we looked in detail at rivers and the different species and associations of trees, and in the evening the children had a quiz to show what they had learned during the day.

On Wednesday, after an early stretching and breakfast, we took to the water to admire the nearby Danube estuary, the Outer Beda, from a canoe. Guided by a staff member of the Danube-Drava National Park, we learned a lot about the flora and fauna of the area and became a real team during the nearly two-hour paddle. In the afternoon, the children learned more about fishing, the different species of fish and classic peasant farming, and in the evening they had the chance to show how attentive they were during the day's activities in a fun game of Be a (Candy)Millionaire.

During the second half of the week, our campers will have many more experiences; we will learn about pollinating insects, wild flowers, learn about native wildlife species and learn to walk carefully in nature to spot signs that indicate the presence of animals.
